Sridevi Nrithyalaya was founded by Smt K. Suguna (Mother of Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan) in the year 1987 in Villivakkam, a culturally remote area in Chennai. Sridevi Nrithyalaya is registered as a trust with the aim to promote the classical Indian dance forms of Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi. This school has adopted Mellattur style of Bharatanatyam, along with which the students are taught Carnatic music, besides physical activities like yoga for effective learning of the art.
The Nrithyalaya is well-known for spotting young talents and nurturing them into talented performing artistes. At present, over 270 students have been undergoing training here. Only a nominal fee is charged for the classes. The classes are conducted by the Guru and other well-trained teachers.
Quality, perfection and motivation are the mantra of Nrithyalaya. “Dancing is Bliss” – this motto is inculcated during the training. Each student gets individual attention in the class, nurturing a close relationship with the teacher. The teachers of Nrithyalaya take absolute care to ensure that the training period in this institute is an experience of learning dance with joy. The students are taught the nuances of the art before they are graduated.
SDN has a well-equipped library. Besides books of eminent authors, audio and video recordings are also available for reference by students.
With the main school at K. K. Nagar, the institution has branches in Villivakkam, Kilpauk Garden and Saligramam.
